What Sets Us Apart

We focus on technique development rather than just showcasing the beauty of the regional outfits. Technique in traditional and stylized footwork is done while building knowledge of the different regional dances.

Our Instructors

Our instructors are all different, with diverse lives, styles and backgrounds but what is consistent is that all of them are kind, committed and inspirational.

Instructors

Abigail Hernandez is the Artistic Director of Folklórico Canela, leading the company’s choreography, artistic standards, and cultural programming. Her foundation in Mexican folklórico began at age five under the instruction of Kerry Ampuero in Sonoma County, setting the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to disciplined training and cultural preservation.

Abby’s technical and artistic development continued through intensive study with Danzantes Unidos Workshops and the Centro Mexicano de la Danza, where she deepened her knowledge of regional styles, choreography, and pedagogical methodology. She now applies this experience to design high-expectation training programs, develop dancers across all levels, and direct performances that honor the depth and regional precision of Mexican folklórico.

Abby also leads the Tiny Tots program for ages 2–5, where she builds early motor coordination, musical awareness, and cultural connection from the start—ensuring the youngest dancers enter the program with strong habits and a sense of identity.

Her focus is clear: elevate the organization’s artistic quality, preserve cultural integrity, and provide dancers with meaningful opportunities to grow on and off the stage.

Sarah Elizabeth Gonzalez

Sarah brings strong technical skill and rigorous discipline to her work with Folklórico Canela. She specializes in the regional styles of Sinaloa, shaped through direct training under Angie Glez, founder of Folkloterapia. Sarah emphasizes precision in footwork, body alignment, and musical interpretation, pushing dancers to deliver authentic, high-quality performances. Her command of Sinaloa technique and her commitment to cultural accuracy strengthen the company’s artistic standards and elevate the development of every student she teaches.

Sarah works extensively with younger dancers, where she sets clear standards for footwork, alignment, and discipline from the start. She pushes students to build strong foundational habits and develop the confidence required for authentic performance. Her combination of regional expertise and structured, student-focused instruction makes her a critical contributor to the growth and readiness of our developing dancers.

Vanessa Uribe Ibarra

Vanessa Ibarra began her folklórico training with Folklórico Canela at age eight, developing a strong technical foundation and stage readiness through years of disciplined practice and performance. Her commitment, consistency, and rapid growth elevated her into a leadership role within the company, where she now instructs the next generation of dancers.

Vanessa focuses on building clean technique, musicality, and confidence in young students. She brings firsthand experience of progressing through the program, giving her a clear understanding of the standards, expectations, and cultural responsibility that define Folklórico Canela’s training. Her teaching is rooted in discipline, authenticity, and a deep respect for the art form that shaped her.
